Psoriasis, Eczema, & Tea Tree

Tea tree has been in use for hundreds of years by the Aboriginal people of Australia. Tea tree oil comes from the leaves of the tea tree. Although some find the essence of tea tree overpowering due to the camphorous odor, the medicinal benefits far outweigh the odor. In this article, we will explore how tea tree soap can be a valuable addition to your psoriasis treatment program.

Psoriasis & plaque psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that causes thick, red, & scaly plaque on the skin. There is some evidence that tea tree oil can help manage the itchiness & pain associated with psoriasis. While there is no cure for psoriasis, any tool in your toolbox to manage the symptoms is a welcomed sign. Psoriasis consists of rashes, scaling, dry, cracked skin, itching, & burning. Psoriasis does appear similar to eczema & you should always get diagnosed by your physician. While psoriasis is associated with a problem with the immune system, eczema is commonly triggered by irritants.

Eczema triggers include irritants such as soaps, detergents, shampoo, bubble bath products, and even environmental factors such as cold or dry weather, dampness, dust mites, pet dander, pollen & molds. Eczema can cause dry, cracked skin, itchiness, rash, swelling, oozing & crustiness. While the discomfort is, well, uncomfortable, eczema can be more difficult to pinpoint the source of irritation. As we age, our immune system weakens & this can increase our susceptibility to allergens.

Substituting items used in your daily routine can decrease the amount of time you spend being uncomfortable in your own skin. Starting or ending your day with a high-quality soap with no artificial color or ingredients is a seamless way to incorporate the benefits of tea tree into your day. Consider changing only 1 item in your routine to discover how your skin will respond. The use of cold processed soaps with tea tree will allow the skin to be moisturized and will not over-dry your skin which may increase irritation. Cold process soaps contain all the naturally occurring oil that the soap was produced with leading to the jewel of cold process soaps, glycerin. Glycerin is great for the skin because it acts as a humectant, which is a substance that allows the skin to retain moisture. Glycerine can increase skin hydration, relieve dryness, & refresh the skin's surface. Glycerine is also an emollient, which means it can soften skin.

With all the potential that soap & tea tree can provide, this camphorous oil has the potential to make a day in your skin more comfortable. Small changes can help in big ways.
